Adeline used to buy REALLY LOUD boxers for Mert, for a little humor and Mert said "Doesn't Dick get jealous -when you are buying boxers for another man?" Adeline said, no...whenever I get you one - I get the same ones for him too : )
One day he modeled them all!

DAD STORIES - Mert

Dad out in the front yard teaching us children to pitch, he was a great coach and would catch as he taught.

He was always doing fun projects with all of us, say building a go-cart. I think he was just the smartest and most athletic, big-kid in the neighborhood.

The sound of crickets in the evening… sitting with him on the front step while he enjoyed a cold beer, sometimes sharing about 2 ounces of it with mom, she would get a small glass for it. I loved his voice when he told stories about the guys he worked with. He was a big joker, and was known for walking into the Community Tap on his hands. I loved that my dad was the life of the party. He was fun-loving and warm.

He loved for us kids to help him with his projects, having us fetch tools for him, or looking for nails in the grass.

Coming out with a flashlight in the middle of the night to hunt for night crawlers with him, so we could go fishing at Kennedy Lake the next day.

When we had the speedboat, teaching us all to water-ski, and he could do this with his bare feet, this was before they even had a slalom ski and he would pick up one leg and ski on the other.

Teaching me to sail at Twin Lakes. He loved toys and anything that needed tinkering with, he always had a project.

He was great a teaching us to drive, he didn’t slam his foot repeatedly into the floor of the passenger side, as if this would help me put on the breaks like mom did. He was always calm when teaching driver etiquette. I feel like I learned the semi-truck drivers rules from dad.

Writing our name with sparklers on the 4th of July.
Dad would light those sparklers with his cigarette. He seemed to really enjoy firecrackers, fire, etc. I know he did.

Dad would take us out into the driveway to watch…during a tornado.
He knew when it was safe.

Shary Albaugh is Mert's Cousin. Her mother was Nadine Hurdel Albaugh
who was Mert's very young aunt (Lloyd's little sister) said the following ,
At your Dad's funeral I didn't get to read or look through all of the articles, pictures, stories, etc. It took me most of my life to understand that Grandma Hurdel raised Daryl and that he was like a little brother to Mom. I never knew how close they were. However my older sister Kathy said when Daryl came back from Japan? that he had bought 2 bomber jackets for Kathy and my older brother Danny. I THINK I may have a picture of them wearing those jackets. If I find that picture or if Kathy has it I'll send you that picture. Love, Shary
